You Still in New York? šŸ’½

It feels chilly to say this, but here we are winding down the summer together. Iā€™m not lying when I tell you that they asked if I wanted pumpkin flavoring in my iced coffee this morning, and I said yes pleaseā€¦šŸ˜Ŗ But we still have a few more weeks of summer left, and possibly another heat wave as we start to transition. This w33kly reflected that feeling when I gave it the full run, and I think the music world is starting to make that shift as well. Fewer festivals and more tours, big albums getting set for release before the sleepy holiday season, and Fall themes popping up everywhere. I hope the music you find here can serve as an accompaniment to your waning summer weeks, and maybe remind you to queue up a couple summer favs you forget about before itā€™s too late.

No big hefty note here for the w33kly section, but I want to add something so you donā€™t just scroll on by. My favorite song from mal soundsā€™ new EP is in here, our friend Stevedreez let off some demos that are as good as half the albums that came out this summer, and I donā€™t know A$AP Rocky personally, but his music video for ā€œTaylor Swifā€ is absolutely bonkers so I had to show some respect. Please give this latest w33kly a spin and let me know what you think šŸŽ§

Featured Projects:

In true AMF fashion, Iā€™m borrowing this section to highlight a few cool projects from the community that I also featured in w33kly. This isnā€™t the first time mal sounds is featured, as heā€™s an OG friend of AMF. Last Friday he released his latest EP, Still In New York, and it feels like the soundtrack to the stages of a coming-of-age indie film. Itā€™s beautiful šŸ“½ļø

Below is Stevedreezā€™s project of essentially demos- proof that this man has absolute bops just sitting around that the people should hear. As he explains on IG, itā€™s a collection of songs from ā€˜21-ā€™23 that ā€œdidnā€™t make other projects or [he] just never finished & never will. Still love em tho.ā€ Honestly, Steve.

As I mentioned before, I donā€™t know A$AP Rocky. But he did pass me at a venue this summer and he was as fashionable and flacko as he alleges to be. This song is vintage Rocky in many ways, and the video feels so true to the aesthetic heā€™s established for himself over the years. This one was directed by Vania Heymann and Gal Muggia, and actually shot in Kiev in 2021. I donā€™t know if thereā€™s any politics behind this video, and wonā€™t be doing the research until after this is shared but still #stopallthewars.

If youā€™ve ever watched a music video and thought ā€œoh well that was an interesting experienceā€ then you should give this a go.

Featured Mix:

The playlist from Spotify that I initially considered for the above section is called House Music is Black Music. Aside from being true, thatā€™s also a sentiment Iā€™ve come to appreciate the last few years as Iā€™ve dug into my own tastes within house and other dance or electronic genres. If you had told me 5 years ago that Zack Fox would be one of the noteworthy American DJs leading the push to further highlight the black roots in house music, I wouldā€™ve laughed and pictured a Boondocks skit. But here I am, in 2024, texting people his ā€œBlack House Radioā€ sets and feeling a pride for the culture and community he has managed to capture in this series.

People who remember him from the Twitter days as @Bootymath may be surprised to see how far heā€™s come in music, but he recently let fans know this is no side quest and his heart is all in it.

I will have some updates to our news stories next month, just so weā€™re not listening to all this music in a vacuum. Lots of these situations, like Spotifyā€™s current legal battles and the state of large tours, will affect the way we experience music through the years, for better or worse. A reminder that itā€™s our job as music fans to do the best we can to support the artists we love so their success isnā€™t subject to the whims of the industry.

The first step is sharing, so go ahead and forward this link to a music lover šŸ˜ See you in the fall!
