AMF Music | July '24

It has been.....hot 🥵

We’re getting this month’s rundown in just before the deadline, folks! In June we took a look at some news and current events around the industry, and I got feedback that it’s a welcome feature here in the newsletter. So going forward, I’ll be working in those types of bites based on what’s in the news and on our collective minds. In the meantime though, check out the usual offerings down below - a new w33kly, a new playlist, and a mix from a personal favorite.

I won’t often make calls for submissions, but I do want to encourage everyone to share music, whether it’s yours or your favorite artist’s. Yes, I hope the newsletter grows, and I want that growth to reflect the community and its involvement over the years. Even if this newsletter never rivals the billboard charts in terms of visibility, we should all be in the habit of sharing the music - and other artforms - that inspire us in and outside of our professional lives.

If I’m being honest, I didn’t spend much time this last month listening to new playlists - largely because I’ve been focusing on the music in AMF’s circle for upcoming releases. But any artist will tell you that a key to being successful in a creative pursuit is the ability to take a break and consume or observe similar work. It could be for inspiration, for more exposure to the medium, or just to get the artist out of their own world for a moment.

Well, my reason this time was so I can share something new with all my friends. In fact, when I chose to make this second playlist a recurring segment, the idea was actually to personally achieve most of the goals I named. I love music, but the music we want to hear at a given time isn’t always sitting there in front of us. For most of my music-listening life, I’ve been visiting The Fader, and for a couple reasons I’m going to feature their Songs You Need In Your Life.

For one, a few artists friends have been featured by The Fader in the last year or so, and that’s been really gratifying having grown up with the publication. The other reason is to acknowledge the passing of one of The Fader’s cofounders, Rob Stone. They released a statement on his passing, which followed a private battle with cancer. It’s sad news, but it gives us a reason to go back and appreciate his legacy, the music he put in front of so many listeners as well as the artists whose talents he sought to highlight through the years.

I know I’m not alone in this, so I’m going to share: you know how sometimes you just look at all the apps in your phone, all the social media and ads and fomo, and you’re just like “what am I doing here??” The best thing you can tell yourself or a struggling friend is that you’ve only kept those 5 accounts so that you can stay in touch with everyone you know (or don’t know), and to be available for connections with new people. That’s pretty true for most people - and sitting down for this section of the newsletter was my latest validation. opens Instagram 🤳🏾

Dwai is a NYC-based DJ, and one of the first DJs I met when I came to the city. Not only was he friends with some folks I knew, he was also dope at his job the first night I saw him - I vividly remember dancing around Silver Factory with a couple strangers, and there might even be some pics out there that remember as well. Over the years I’ve kept up with Dwai online, but I haven’t pulled up on him in a couple years now. SO when I saw Dwai post on IG just this morning about some recent successes and future sets, I took it as my cue. I was able to dive back into this mix (house-only, which I’ve been asking many of you for), and get a couple events on my calendar.

If you’re also interested, he has upcoming sets in 4 of the first 5 days of August - so NO excuses for me or for you! As usual, give this a spin and share with a friend who you think may be a fan.

August is a big month for music in the AMF world so we’ll be busy cooking up, sending out invites, and getting more music in your headphones. See you next month ✌🏾
