Spooky, Scary 😱

Happy Halloween, ghouls and goblins! I’m very disappointed to share that I recently had the opportunity to carve a pumpkin, anything I wanted for just $3, and I didn’t take it. Hoping I don’t come to regret that. BUT instead I did manage to finish this rundown in time for Halloween and for that I’m eerily, spookily proud. As usual we’ve got an updated w33kly, a featured playlist, and a new mix to check out. Throw on the headphones and give these a spin while you stroll around your neighborhood wishing you could be trick or treating too 🥲

Featured Playlist:

Right before I decided not to make this a Halloween-themed segment, I made one last-ditch effort and pulled up one of the [respectfully] weirder places for reputable music on the internet: Bandcamp. Scrolling just beyond “Best Ambient of October” and “The Builders: Pioneers of Musique Concrète” posts, I found what I was looking for. “Songs for Spooky Season” is much deeper than it sounds, as it digs into some of the mystery and sound design that goes into the music that spooks us 🧛🏾 Honestly, part of the reason I went to Bandcamp is that I expected they’d include some type of interesting commentary, either about the holiday or the music they’ve curated, and they didn’t disappoint.

Exhibit A: “one of the most important figures in occult science in the 20th century”
Exhibit B: “In these silent, cloistered spaces, what possible horrors might grow?”
Exhibit C: “where the dead composer’s voice somehow manages to communicate to the world via the recording process”

Perfect. There is a such a small chance you’ll recognize any of these musicians, but chances are high you will get that spooky vibe you’re looking for before we get Mariah Carey until the new year 🧟

Featured Mix:

Choosing this month‘s mix, I tried to think of DJs or branded events that I personally like but haven’t yet featured here. This one kills both the birds, and I think girl_irl’s set for Book Club Radio earlier this year is a perfect choice for the season. In the comments she says this is what she’d play ~in a Blood Rave 🦇🩷~ and that feels like a perfect vibe for closing out October. Genre-wise this set is hard groove and hard trance, and a hard departure from the house and techno I usually go for in a club setting. Either way, it’s hard and after meeting girl_irl recently I really wanted to show love here in the letter. Pop something and enjoy!

You can take this as a news update or a joke about ghosts in the algorithm, but I wanted to share another article on the AI streaming mess like I said I would. I saw this one recently about an artist who made north of $10 million using bots to stream his own AI songs and is now facing serious prison time. It’s not happy news, but this topic has become a common concern for artists and music fans alike, and I’ve gotten lots of questions about it this year. While it does mess with the ecosystem, it doesn’t stop us from discovering great new artists. Let’s keep making our own music, curating our own playlists, and listening to our real favorite artists 🎶
